Wide Area Network (WAN)

WAN - Internet

A computer network that spans a relatively large geographical area. Typically, WAN consists of two or more LANs.

Computers connected to a wide area network are often connected through public networks, such as telephone systems. They can also be connected through dedicated transoceanic cable or satellite uplinks. The largest WAN in existance is the Internet.

With this type of network, many businesses with offices in different parts of the world might have setup their LAN. Through a dedicate connection (satellite or telephone line) all the established offices can communicate with each other forming a WAN.

A WAN is an excellent way for companies to utilize geographically remote resources and centralize productivity. A leased line, or a satellite uplink, or an affordable DSL-based WAN allows employees, field personal, and management full or restricted access to pertinent data.
