IEEE-1394

FireWire Cable

A high speed standard that supports data transfer rates of up to 400Mbps (1394a) and 800Mbps (1394b). This interface is also known as FireWire (developed and trademarked by Apple); although other companies use other names.

In a single FireWire port can be connected up to 63 external devices. FireWire supports the following:

  • Isochronous data. This refer to the process of delivering data as fast as it is display and ensuring that the audio is synchronized with the video. This makes it ideal for devices that need to transfer high levels of data in real-time, such as video devices.
  • Plug-and-Play and hot plugging. This means that when the user plugs the device the system will recognize it, and do not have to turn off when connecting a device.

The IEEE-1394 provides power to peripheral devices.
